Liberal arts schools exist to teach undergrads and thankfully professor research is secondary in these institutions. Consequently, professors are more likely to be hired since they’re terrific teachers. And when professors are teaching 15 to 20 students in a class in a liberal arts school, the faculty are far more accessible and are available to be advisers and mentors.

Digging Deeper When Researching Colleges

Master’s level universities offer bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, but few if any doctoral programs. The dearth of PhD programs can be an advantage  for undergraduates if a university puts more of its institutional focus on educating students pursuing bachelor’s degrees. It is important to determine precisely how important undergrads are at these schools — the answer will be different!
These trends make sense to me due to the significantly different missions of these institutions. Here is a snapshot of each type:
University of North Carolina at Asheville (public liberal arts school)

If you’re thinking about how to identify master’s level universities, they are identified as regional universities in U.S. News’ college positions.

At research universities, it’s the graduate students primarily stuck with dealing with undergrads. At Harvard, for instance, almost 1,200 of the teachers are graduate students. And as a fact, how much access is a student going to get to professors when there might be hundreds attending their assignments.

It was almost impossible finding state schools with decent scores. The ones I found were all located in Virginia! A special shout from the College of William and Mary!!!

As a group, liberal arts schools kicked butt. Many private liberal arts schools earned excellent scores.

University of Maryland

Specifically, I recommend looking at a set of evaluations that you will see on the left hand page of each institution’s profile:
The highest possible score for every one of these scientist evaluations is 99. Students rate the professors in their own institutions. The Princeton Review surveyed roughly 137,000 students one of the 382 institutions in the book.
